Some people notice everything: a change in the weather, a scent from the kitchen, the one ingredient in a meal that does not agree with them. In the language of the 8 body types, that clear, finely tuned quality is the signature of the Metal type. Like Wood and Earth, Metal comes in two sides, a yang side and a yin side, and knowing which one you lean toward is what turns eating well into a plan that actually fits you.

What the Metal body type is

Rooted in Eastern constitutional thinking, and in the 8-constitution tradition of Korean medicine, Metal takes its name from the element of clarity and structure, and from the crisp, drawing-in energy of autumn. Metal types share a strong lung-and-large-intestine system, the body’s machinery for taking in and letting go, which tends to give them a lighter frame, an upright carriage, and a sensitivity to their surroundings that other types simply do not have. Within Metal there are two constitutions: the yang side, Metal+ (금양), and the yin side, Metal- (금음). Both run on that same clarity, but they express it differently and do best with slightly different choices.

Metal+ (금양): perceptive, precise, and easily overloaded

The yang side of Metal is the classic sensitive type: observant, analytical, quietly intense, usually slim, with a system that reacts fast to whatever it takes in. That sensitivity is a real strength, because Metal+ tends to notice an imbalance long before other types would. It also means this constitution is easily overloaded by rich, heavy, or heavily processed food, and it is often where skin flare-ups, seasonal sensitivities, and vague off days show up first. Metal+ does best on a light, plant-forward plate: leafy greens, a wide range of fresh vegetables, rice, and lighter proteins such as fish and shellfish, while easing off red meat, heavy dairy, and sugar. For this side, simple is not the same as restrictive. Simple is what lets the system settle.

Metal- (금음): sharp, decisive, and quick to react

The yin side of Metal is less common and, in its own way, even more responsive. Metal- types tend to be sharp, decisive, and fast-moving, with a strong large intestine and a gut that gives immediate feedback: when something does not suit them, they know within hours rather than days. Digestive upset, unexplained tiredness, and a heavy dragging feeling after certain meals are the usual signals. Metal- does best on seafood, leafy vegetables, and rice, kept simple and consistent, and tends to struggle with meat-heavy meals and long stretches of rich eating. For this side, the whole game is listening to that fast feedback and actually acting on it instead of pushing through.

Everyday habits that keep Metal in balance

Across both sides, Metal does best when what goes in is clean, light, and uncomplicated: a plate that leans green and fresh, proteins that are easy on the system, meals that are not rushed, and enough real rest, because Metal’s sensitivity runs well on a full tank and frays quickly on an empty one. Breathing room matters here in the literal sense too. This is the constitution most closely tied to the lungs, and fresh air, unhurried mornings, and gentle movement do as much for it as any single food choice. It is also where a clean, simple protein shake earns its place, light and easy to digest and free of the heavy, overly rich ingredients that tend to overload Metal, so getting enough protein does not have to mean a meal this constitution will regret. If there is one word for Metal, it is clarity: fed simply and given room to breathe, it is the most perceptive and precise of the eight.
