Four glasses of a pale golden protein shake in a row on a wooden bench, evoking how similar-looking shakes can carry very different formulation labels.

A Score-20 recipe from one of the excluded body types outranks every shake we've ever labeled "Meal Replacement" — on both score and protein. The label was never a nutrient threshold.

Question

Why do three of MOMS' eight body types never get a recipe tagged "Meal Replacement" — even when their own catalogs hold higher-scoring, higher-protein shakes than the ones that do carry that label?

Hypothesis

We expected the "Meal Replacement" tag to be gated by a nutrient floor — a minimum Score or a calorie threshold — the same way "Filling" is assumed to track a calorie range. If so, any body type with a recipe clearing that floor should be eligible for a Meal Replacement shake.

Method

We pulled all 201 recipes from the internal recipe database and isolated the 14 rows (7%) carrying the Cal Label "Meal Replacement," then grouped them by body-type code (BT): 8 codes covering Wood, Earth, Metal, and Water in Yang/Yin pairs. We recorded the Score and Kcal range of every Meal Replacement recipe, then checked how many recipes in each zero-Meal-Replacement body type already sat inside that same range. For external grounding: Astbury et al.'s 2019 systematic review in Obesity Reviews defines meal replacement by intent and use ("discrete foods, food products, or drinks... used to replace foods usually consumed at one or more meals with the intent to reduce daily energy intake"), not by a fixed macronutrient cutoff, and a food-law analysis of FDA regulation confirms the term has never been defined in federal regulation either.

Results

14 of 201 recipes (7%) are tagged Meal Replacement, concentrated in 5 of 8 body types — EY (5), MI (5), WI (2), WY (1), WAY (1) — while EI, MY, and WAI have zero. Every Meal Replacement recipe scores 13-17 and runs 366.2-399.4 kcal. But the three zero-tag body types are full of recipes inside that exact window: EI alone has 19 recipes at or above 366.2 kcal, including "Cozy Glow" (EI-W2-WARM-001-V1, Warmth & Circulation) — Score 20, the dataset's ceiling, 387.8 kcal, 37g protein, more protein than any of the 14 Meal Replacement recipes — labeled "Standard." WAI's "Power Recover" (WAI-W2-PROTEIN-001-V1, Strength & Protein Recovery) scores 20 at 384.8 kcal and 32.9g protein, and is labeled "Filling."

What Failed

Both threshold hypotheses failed. Score doesn't gate the label — EI, MY, and WAI have 26, 19, and 24 recipes respectively scoring at or above the Meal Replacement floor of 13. Kcal doesn't gate it either — those same three body types have 19, 12, and 20 recipes at or above the Meal Replacement floor of 366.2 kcal. What actually predicts the tag is a closed set of 8 Goal names, out of 28 in the system (Energy Boost, Balance & Gut Health, Cleanse & Liver Detox, Vital Boost & Energy Recharge, Strength & Base Build, Vital & Energy Boost, Recovery & Calm, Calm & Gut Support) — and none of those 8 names appear anywhere in the Week 1-4 rotations written for EI, MY, or WAI.

What We Learned

On MOMS Plan today, "Meal Replacement" signals "was written under one of 8 particular Goal themes," not "highest-scoring or most calorie-dense option available to your body type." A customer whose body type's rotation never touches those 8 Goals will never see a shake called Meal Replacement, regardless of what their own catalog can nutritionally support.

What Changed at MOMS

We're decoupling the Cal Label field from Goal-name inheritance and re-deriving Meal Replacement eligibility directly from the Score and protein thresholds we already use for the Filling ceiling, so a body type is no longer structurally locked out of the label by an accident of which Goal names its rotation happened to be written with.
